Every year on Labor Day Weekend, professional and amateur sand carvers descend on Imperial Beach in San Diego for the U.S. Open Sandcastle Competition. This is a great event to attend with the whole family and admire the work of these talented artists.
Things To Do
In addition to surging, kayaking, swimming, and sailing, another favorite San Diego water activity is Stand Up Paddleboarding. There are many local companies that can teach you and many of the seaside hotels offer classes. It’s a great way to see San Diego and good exercise, too!
Looking to try something new? Get up on a board and go surfing in the beautiful San Diego waters. If you’ve never been surfing before, there are plenty of surf schools that offer lessons. More experienced? You can also rent a board and get out on the water.
See San Diego from the air! Most hot air ballooning in San Diego occurs over the picturesque hills of Del Mar, Rancho Santa Fe, and Carmel Valley.
Feeling adventurous? Craving an adrenaline rush? Go hang gliding from the Torrey Pines Glider Port. Soar over the cliffs and ocean down below.
This is one of the only places in the world where the Torrey Pine grows and its also one of the best hiking spots. The hike isn’t too long, but beware the hike is more strenuous going up the cliff. This is a lovely place to catch a romantic sunset. The beach below is full of tide pools. Climb up on the largest rock to catch the best one!
If you’ve been to the beach in San Diego at all, you will have noticed the kayakers out on the water. The good news? You can get in on the fun too! The most common place for sea kayaking is in beautiful La Jolla Cove. You can go out with a regular group or go on a private tour. Some of the kayak companies even offer cave tours…definitely something you will want to do if you have the opportunity. Not only does kayaking provide you with a unique view of the ocean, you’ll also get the chance to see seals, seabirds, fish, and even (harmless) leopard sharks up close!
During the summer, you can watch the Padres play at the beautiful Petco Park!
Catch the San Diego Chargers play a game at Qualcomm Stadium!
The hugely popular December Nights takes place in Balboa Park over one weekend. Come early to find parking: thousands of people turn out for this event! Enjoy holiday activities, food, drinks, lights, music, and more. It’s truly a magical and festive event.
